Other health systems use different public-health advice. The UK National Health Service advises 10 micrograms, or 400 IU, daily for most people aged four and older during autumn and winter, and year-round for people at higher risk of low vitamin D because they are seldom outdoors, usually cover most of their skin outdoors or have dark skin (NHS: Vitamin D). Which vitamin D benefits for women are well established?
Calcium absorption and bone mineralisation
Vitamin D is required for active intestinal calcium absorption and normal calcium balance. Without enough vitamin D, net calcium absorption falls; prolonged severe deficiency can impair bone mineralisation and cause osteomalacia (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements: Calcium; NIH Office of Dietary Supplements: Vitamin D). Cod liver oil can contain a high amount of vitamin D, but it also contains preformed vitamin A. That makes it a poor product to choose casually during pregnancy, when excessive preformed vitamin A can harm a developing fetus. Is vitamin D3 better than D2?

D3 is commonly derived from lanolin. Vegan D3 made from lichen is also available. D2 is usually made by exposing yeast or mushrooms to ultraviolet light. If dietary preference matters, read the ingredient list rather than relying only on the large “D3” or “vegan” wording on the front.
